ALLOW - LET - PERMIT - ENABLE
the difference between 'allow', 'let', 'permit' and 'enable'

ALLOW, LET and PERMIT all mean to authorize something, but there are some differences to note:
‘Allow, ‘let’ and ‘permit’ are usually interchangeable.
‘Allow’ and ‘permit’ are more formal than ‘let’.
‘Allow’ and ‘permit’ are followed by an infinitive (with 'to') or a noun.
‘Let’ is followed by the bare infinitive (without ‘to’).
ENABLE means to give the ability to do something or make something possible.

ALLOW
'Allow' means to authorize or give permission to do something.

• “Mark allowed his son to drive his car.”
• “You are allowed to take pictures but you cannot use a flash.”
• “The suspect was not allowed to leave the country.”
• "Employees are allowed to work from home."
• "Am I allowed to park here ?"
• "The boss allowed us to leave early. because of the bus strike"

'Allow' also means to facilitate something, or give the necessary time or space :

• "Please allow about 5 days for your order to arrive."
• "You’re allowed one hour to do the test."
• "We must allow enough space in the room for a table."
• "She paused to allow her eyes to adjust to the darkness."

LET
'Let' is the most informal of the three verbs concerning permission. It is not used in the passive voice.

• "I let the child try some of the food."
• "Dad let me drive his car."
• "I’ll let you decide which road to take."
• "Don’t let the dog sit on the sofa."
• "Let me look at the letter before you send it."
• "Her parents let Anna go to the cinema with her friends."

PERMIT
‘Permit’ is more common in sentences about official rules and regulations. It means to authorize, give consent or tolerate.
'Permit' is more formal than 'allow' or 'let'.

• "The company regulations do not permit much flexibility."
• "Smoking is not permitted on the plane."
• "Dogs are not permitted inside the store."
• "The museum does not permit photography inside the building."
• "No reproduction of any kind is permitted."

• "He showed his work permit to the boss."
• "We applied for a building permit to add an extension to our house."
• "They will have to apply for a residency permit if want to stay."

ENABLE
'Enable' means to give the ability to do something or to make something possible.

• "A computer will enable you to work from home."
• "Click this button to enable notifications."
• "My new glasses enable me to read small print."
• "The new system will enable people to vote online."
• "The wheels on the bedside table enable my mother to move it easily·"
• "This software will enable us to track sales."
