for  -  during  -  while
are used in time expressions as shown below :

 for :   for is followed by a length of time : for 1 hour 
 
It answers the question : How long?
 during :   during is followed by a nounduring the film
 
It means 'throughout the time' or 'in the course of' an action or event.
 
 while :   while is followed by a subject and a verbwhile I was watching the film.
 
It means 'during the time that' an action was taking place.
 examples :   I waited in front of the cinema for one hour.
 
Nobody made noise during the film.
 
We held hands while we were watching the film.
